Pay Attention to Detail

By, Lauren Chance

Listen to the ocean splashing against itself,
glistening from the reflection of the setting sun.
The one book on the shelf
that isn’t dusty;
or the one that is.
The picking of a guitar,
a key on the piano,
or the scratch of pen on paper
while I watch him draw.
Seeing a loved one caper,
who thinks no one is looking.
The little specks
on the one with brown eyes.
Each of these things
simple, yet complex.
When you hug someone close,
and your head rests on their chest,
listen to their heart.
Pay attention to each of these things
before you depart.
